Chapter 17

Adam was in the barn when Grace and George arrived at the farm at exactly 8:30 the next morning. He greeted them with a hearty, “Welcome, come on in.” With a pitch fork in his hand, he motioned to George to join him at the gate to Cloudy’s stall.

He looked pointedly at Grace. “I think Lydia needs some follow up on what’s been going on.”

“But I was… .”

Adam lowered his head and gave Grace a go-away hand motion. She frowned but finally said, “Good idea. See you two later.” She walked to the house and knocked at the front door.

She heard Lydia’s voice. “Come in.”

Grace looked back at the barn as she stepped into the house but could see nothing. “Hi, Lydia. Where are you?” She looked around and the thought registered that Lydia always came to the door. Strange.

“Here I am, over here.”

Grace followed her voice, and saw her slumped in a chair in the living room beyond the kitchen. “What are you doing over there? You’re usually bustling around in the kitchen or at your desk.”

“Come over and sit down.”

Grace moved to the chair near Lydia and noticed the large, round braided rug under their chairs. “Did you make this rug?”

“Yes. I used up a lot of old clothes making that rug, but I don’t think it likes me.”

“Why do you say that?”

“It tripped me and I went sprawling on the floor.”

“Oh Lydia! Are you all right?”

“My knee and hip hurt. Other than that I’m okay—except it’s hard to move around. Suddenly, it’s no fun being old.”

“You’re not old.”

“Well, today I decided sore bones make 85 old. Can you help me into the bathroom? My tank is really full.”

“At least you still have your sense of humor.” Grace helped her until she was safely back in her chair. “When did you fall?”

“This morning. Okay, okay, I should have called someone, but I knew you and Georgie were coming so I decided to wait—so sue me.”

“I’m going to call 911.”

“I don’t need an ambulance.”

“They’ll look at you much faster in the emergency room if you arrive that way.”

After making the call, Grace said, “Stay put, I’m going to tell Adam.”

“I can’t go far.”

Grace ran to the paddock where George was riding Cloudy.

“Hi Mom!”

“Woo hoo! Like it?”

“It’s awesome.”

She moved over to Adam. “I called 911 and I have to follow the ambulance to the hospital. Lydia had a fall this morning and I think some one should look at her hip. Will you keep an eye on George for me?”

“Sure.”

“I’ll be back as soon as possible. I would hate to miss the police visit this afternoon.”

“Don’t worry. If you’re not back in time, we’ll fill you in.”

As Grace ran back to the house, the ambulance came wailing up the drive. Adam looked at George. “Better get down and come into the barn. Leave Cloudy in the paddock. I need to check on Lydia to see if I can help. Your Mom can handle it, but I’ll feel better if I check it out.
